The Cost of Watching Life Pass You By.

Every Day You Wait Every Day You Wait Is Another Day You'll Never Get Back: What Playing It Safe Is Really Costing You
You ever scroll through Instagram and see a woman your age living her best life—traveling solo, starting that business, looking genuinely happy—and feel that knot tighten in your chest?
That's not jealousy. That's your soul reminding you that you were supposed to be living too.
We've been conditioned to wait. Wait until the kids are grown. Wait until you lose the weight. Wait until you have more money saved. Wait until you're completely healed from the divorce. Wait until you figure out who you are without him. Wait until the timing is perfect.
But here's what nobody tells us: while we're waiting for permission to start living, life is moving on without us. And every single day we spend in waiting mode is a day we can't get back.
Let me tell you about my 2019 wake-up call.
After a breakup that year, I found myself doing exactly what I'd done after every other breakup: I stopped exercising. I self-isolated. I overate, overslept, overthought everything. I questioned myself, my decision-making, and how the hell I missed all those red flags. Again.
I quietly shut down for five years while presenting a smile on my face, faking like life was fine and couldn't be better. Meanwhile, I gained 40 pounds. Got diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. I constantly ruminated about the past, playing over and over how I could've prevented the chaos in my life.
I was watching my life pass by while pretending I was living it.
Then one morning I woke up with my mom on my mind. She passed away in 2010, but that morning, her words came back to me like she was sitting right there. After my first heartbreak in 2003 (and I was a complete mess), I would literally sit in sadness, overeat, sleep, and just let myself go. My mom looked at me one day and said, "Don't repeat my mistakes sitting around waiting for life to get better. Life waits for no one. Go live yours."
That morning, those words hit different. I realized I had a pattern of checking out after my relationships ended. And this pattern wasn't just costing me relationships—it was costing me my health, my happiness, my life.
I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and start working on myself.
You're not 25 anymore with unlimited time to "figure it out later." Whether you're 35, 45, 55, or beyond, the math is getting real. The dreams you've been putting on hold? They're not getting younger. The version of yourself you keep promising you'll become "someday"? She's tired of waiting for you to show up.
Think about where you were five years ago. What were you telling yourself then? "Once the kids are older, I'll focus on me." "Once I get through this rough patch, I'll start living again." "Once I heal from this heartbreak, I'll pursue my dreams." Now look at where you are today. How many of those things have you actually done?
For too many of us, the answer is painful. We're still waiting. Still postponing. Still putting everyone and everything ahead of our own lives. Still making ourselves small to make others comfortable. Still choosing what's familiar over what's possible.
The cost of watching life pass you by isn't just about missed opportunities. It's about who you're becoming while you wait.
You're becoming the woman who's mastered the art of making excuses. The woman who's so good at explaining why now isn't the right time that you've convinced yourself it's true. The woman who can list a hundred reasons why you can't, but struggles to name even one reason why you should.
You're becoming invisible—to others, but more importantly, to yourself. When's the last time you looked in the mirror and saw a woman with dreams, desires, and a life worth living? Or do you just see someone going through the motions, checking boxes, keeping everyone else happy while your own soul slowly dies?
Let's talk about what this waiting is actually costing you:
Your health is paying the price. I learned this the hard way. Five years of checking out didn't just cost me time—it cost me my health. Type II Diabetes. High blood pressure. High cholesterol. Forty pounds I didn't recognize. Your body keeps score when you're not living authentically. The stress of pretending you're fine when you're dying inside? It shows up as weight you can't lose, sleep you can't get, health issues that won't resolve. How much longer are you going to ignore the message?
Your sense of self is disappearing. You've spent so many years being everything to everyone else—wife, mother, employee, caretaker, friend—that you've forgotten who you are underneath all those roles. And the longer you wait to reclaim yourself, the harder it becomes to remember what you wanted before life told you what you should want.
Your patterns are repeating. This is the one that got me. I wasn't just dealing with one breakup—I was dealing with a pattern I'd been repeating since 2003. Every relationship ended the same way. Every time, I responded the same way. And every time, I told myself "this time will be different" while doing the exact same things. Your patterns don't break themselves. They repeat until you decide to do something different.
Your dreams are expiring. That business you wanted to start? That degree you wanted to finish? That creative passion you put on hold? They're not waiting patiently in some cosmic holding pattern. They're fading. Getting quieter. Becoming less believable with every year that passes.
Your relationships are suffering. When you're not living fully, you can't love fully. You're showing up half-present in your friendships because you're distracted by all the things you're not doing. You're resentful in your marriage because you've made yourself small to keep the peace. You're disconnected from your kids because you're so busy managing everyone else's life that you forgot you have one too.
Your financial future is dimming. Every year you don't invest in yourself—in that education, that business, that skill, that opportunity—is a year of earning potential you'll never recover. The gender pay gap is real, but so is the gap between what you're worth and what you're accepting. And that gap gets wider every day you choose comfort over growth.
You're teaching the wrong lessons. If you have daughters, nieces, younger women watching you—what are you showing them? That women wait? That dreams are negotiable? That it's noble to sacrifice your entire life for everyone else? Is that really the legacy you want to leave?
Here's the truth that hurts: You can't get this time back. These aren't practice years. This is your actual life, happening right now, and every day you spend waiting for the "right time" is a day you're choosing to not live.
Whether you're 28 or 58, whether you're single, married, divorced, or it's complicated—you have a choice to make. You can keep telling yourself the same stories about why you can't start living yet. Or you can finally admit that the only thing standing between you and the life you want is your willingness to claim it.
The woman you're meant to be isn't waiting for perfect conditions. She's waiting for you to be brave enough to become her.
Because here's what I know about you, even if we've never met: You're capable of so much more than you're currently doing. You know it. I know it. And that knowing—that gap between who you are and who you could be—that's what keeps you up at night.
So what's it going to be? Are you going to spend another year making excuses? Or are you finally going to admit that every day you wait is another day you'll never get back, and start acting like it?
Your life isn't going to pause while you get comfortable with the idea of living it. It's happening right now. The only question is whether you're going to participate or keep watching from the sidelines.
The cost of waiting isn't just what you're missing. It's who you're not becoming. And that's a price too high to keep paying.
Life waits for no one. My mom knew it. I learned it. And now I'm telling you: Don't wait another day to start living yours.
